Historical fiction set in Mycenaean Greece; based on Greek mythology and Homeric epics sequel to Warrior in Bronze.

Agamemnon has now established himself as King of Mycenae, but he has many problems to deal with. The wild Goatmen and their Dorian allies are raiding his lands. More seriously, he faces food shortages due to the trade embargoes imposed by the rulers of Thebes and Troy. At the same time he faces enemies nearer home in his wife Clytemnaistra and his bastard cousin Aegisthus. To defeat his enemies he must forge an alliance greater than Greece has yet known.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

He was attached the 2nd Battalion The Prince of Wales's Volunteers (South Lancashire), for one. After his year Shipway was posted to the 13th Duke of Connaught's Own Lancers. He spent two years (1936-1938) as Adjutant of the Mekran Levy Corps. In 1940-41 he became a General Staff Officer, at General Headquarters, India. He remained on the staff until 1944 when he was posted to serve with the Hyderabad Lancers.

Shipway retired as a Major and honorary Lieutenant-Colonel in 1948, following Indian independence. After retiring he became a teacher at Cheam School in Berkshire before becoming a novelist at the age of 60.

King in Splendour Agamemnon Book 2 eBook George Shipway Max Reinhard Christopher Posner

In this sequel to Warrior in Bronze, George Shipway has again taken characters from Greek mythology and created a story in which they appear to have been actual historical figures. These were actual complex men who had the ordinary vices of greed and power struggles but who achieved mythical status thanks to the constantly exaggerated tales of bards and minstrels. Or so we are led to believe. For instance, the Trojan Horse was actually a siege tower that had grapnels which looked like horses heads. It was nicknamed the wooden horse and was a dismal failure. Later bards would turn it into the Trojan Horse which allowed soldiers to hide inside and later open the gates of Troy. This all makes for a very interesting book.

The book is very well written with fleshed out characters, descriptions and good dialogue. The battle action and what must have been involved to wage war at that time seems very accurate. This war with Troy was about economic and political power and not about rescuing some ditzy woman named Helen who ran off with her lover, Paris. King Agamemnon knows his Heroes will fight for a romantic cause rather than a political cause so he arranges the Helen of Troy scenario. Now you know the true story. Well, that is all fiction, too, but it makes for a very fine novel.

King in Splendour Agamemnon Book 2 eBook George Shipway Max Reinhard Christopher Posner Reviews

I couldn't finish it. I have enjoyed other books by Mr. Shipway but this did not work for me.
If you like Bernard Cornwell you'll LOVE George Shipway. A great yarn-spinner who does thorough research and adds a firm grasp of strategic historical forces. Don't forget to read Warrior in Bronze first.
The author has cleverly incorporated pseudo facts into the classic lore of the destruction of Troy. The result is an entertaining version that offers a possible alternative to what we have read. An enjoyable read!
Great book. Well researched and well written on the late bronze age.
The writing just gets better. This is history as it should be written. Powerful leaders, powerful Heroes, powerful and trusty companions.
Great Story - felt like I was really there. Beginning was a little hard with wording but I actually looked up the words and picked up new vocabulary words. Hated that it ended after only 2 books. I wanted more about the main character, what happened, and his children.
A good, solid historical novel; rather like Mary Renault without the homosexual subtext. It takes a more or less sympathetic view of Agamemnon; not so common lately. Recommended but not strongly so.
